In 1204 the Fourth Crusade, led by Venetian Doge Dandolo, attacked and took the great Eastern Roman Byzantine capital of Constantinople. This resulted in the sacking of the greatest city in Christendom and the removal by the Venetians of great works of art such as the four bronze horses that adorn the balcony of St Marks Basilica in Venice.
