Pictures & images of Morocco historical and landmark sites. Morocco occupies the north west of Africa and its coastline stretches west from Algeria along the Mediterranean through the straits of Gibraltar then south along the Atlantic. Morocco has been inhabited from as long ago as 190,000 BC when the Maghreb, the name of the land running across Morocco into Algeria and Tunisia, was a fertile Savanna. A large part of northern Morocco is mountainous and three mountain chains run across Morocco from west to east. The most northerly mountain chain is the Rif mountains. In the middle of the country are the High Atlas mountains which are divided from the Low Atlas Mountains in the south by a wide valley. South of the low Atlas are great desert plains that run into the Sahara. Morocco is home to the Berber people who in Roman times ruled Numidia which is in present day Algeria and Tunisia as well as Mauritania. By the 11th century Morocco’s Berbers had become Islamic after long colonisation by the Arabs. Arab rule was though weak and the Berbers formed their own kingdom with Arab overlords. In 711 the Berbers of Morocco invaded the Iberian Peninsular, present day Spain, and by 721 they were raiding as far north as Toulouse. The Berbers occupied the whole of the Iberian Peninsular apart from a small area in the north west and were not expelled completely until 1492 . Today Morocco is a forward thinking Monarchy with the young and dynamic King Mohammed VI as its Monarch. Morocco is an incredible country with an extraordinary range of diverse landscapes. The Rif mountains of the north are lush and grown a diverse range of crops from olives and to tea. The high Atlas is an arid snow capped range of mountains that lead south into arid semi desert where palm plantations fill the deep gorges cut by the snow melt waters from the Atlas. South of the Atlas is desert full of Oasis and camels with a small belt of sand dunes of the Sahara before Morocco reaches the Algerian Border. To the west is the Atlantic ocean whose temperate westerly winds keep the coast cool. Moroccos past can be seen in the great cities of Marrakech and Fez and great adobe Berber palaces can be seen all along the old camel trails that camel caravans used to bring goods from south of the Sahara north to trade in Morocco. It is is fascinating country that is easy to explore by car though a four wheel drive will be needed to explore the desert and high Atlas mountains where Berber nomad families still live as they have done for thousands of years. Morocco is a country of contrast with ultra modern cites like Casablanca and Berbers still living in caves and using donkeys to bring hay down from the high mountain pastures to their small remote villages. Our pictures, photos and images are dedicated to what is a spectacular country with some great landscapes and towns.
