The Naples National Archaeological Museum is one of the most important archaeological museums in the world. At the core of thew Naples Museum Roman artefacts is the Farnese collection, collected by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese who became Pope Paul III from 1543 - 1549. To this was later added later the Roman artefacts and antiquities from the excavations of Pompeii and Herculanum so creating a unique collection of Roman antiquities.
