Bari ( Latin: Barium) is the capital city of the province of Bari and of the Apulia region, on the Adriatic Sea, in Italy. It is the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy after Naples, and is well known as a port and university city, as well as the city of Saint Nicholas. Bari has been an important port and trading centre that linked the Roman mainland with itsEastern provinces. After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, Bari was retaken by the Byzantine Eastern Europeans and remained an important Byzantine port until it was taken by the Norman Robert Giscard after a 3 year siege in 1071, ending Byzantine territories in mainland Italy. As Islamic forces took the Holy land in the Middle Ages, Christians started looting Christian treasures under the pretext of saving them. The Venetians stole the relics of St Mark from Alexandria, and the relics of St Nicholas, Bishop of Mira in present day Turkey, were brought to Bari and a great basilica was built to house them. Both cities reaped the rich rewards from the pilgrimage trade that was important for local economies in the medieval world. The looting of relics from the Middle East is not talked about by the Catholic church and St Nicholas is known as St Nicholas of Bari with no reference to Mira.
