Pictures of the British Museum Lycian Exhibit. Between 1838 and 1844 Sir Charles Fellows a member of the British Association explored the Xanthos river valley in Turkey. He discovered 13 unknown Lycian (Lykian) towns and made drawings of the ruins which he published. Lord Palmerston thought the find so important that he obtained a permit from the Ottoman authorities for Fellows to excavate and export his finds fob the British Museum.
