The British Chinese community is thought to be the oldest Chinese community in Western Europe, with the first Chinese having come from the ports of Tianjin and Shanghai in the early 19th century to settle in port cities such as Liverpool.

They opened the first Chinese restaurants in these ports and today every town in Britain has a Chinese take away. Chinese food became popular because of its simple flavoured sauces and cheap ingredients that made it affordable to everyone.

Chinese dishes like the spring roll appealed to western tastes. The name is a literal translation of the Chinese chūn juǎn . The fillings, size and outer wraps of spring rolls vary greatly across Asia. Western pallets seem to prefer deep fried crispy spring rolls with sprouted bean fillings with meat or prawns served with a sweet chilli sauce.

Noodle chinese style dishes are very popular with the most common being Chow Mein. For the health conscious the stir fry became a main stay. Many chinese dishes are cooked quickly in hot oil in a wok. Black bean or sweet and sour sauces are added and the dish is served on rice or noodles.
