Hamburger & Burgers food pictures, photos& images.

According to Linda Stradleys in the book Cooking In America “The origin of the hamburger is not very clear, but the prevailing version is that at the end of 1800' s, European emigrants reached America on the ships of the Hamburg Lines and were served meat patties quickly cooked on the grill and placed between two pieces of bread.”
Several individual claimed to have invented the Hamburger including Charles R Nagreen of Seymour in 1885 and the family of Frank and Charles Menches of Akron, Ohio. The first Hamburger in a bun was claimed by the family of Oscar Weber Bibly of Tulsa in Oklahoma in 1891. Either way in 1937, Patrick McDonald opened “The Airdrome” restaurant at Monrovia Airport, California selling Hamburgers for 10 cents and the rest is history.

With plenty of cheap beef being produced in the USA, the Hamburger was the perfect food for a get up and go nation that was always in a hurry. Food does not get much faster than the Hamburger and its bread bun means that it can be eaten on the move.

Today the Burger is ver big business with Burger King alone making 2,502 million U.S. dollars in 2007 and McDonalds serving around 68 million customers daily in 119 countries across 35,000 outlets.

At its best the Hamburger is a filling nutritious and tasty meal. The combination of bread and beef spiced up with relish and salad is a winning combination that shows no signs of loosing favour in the paseudo health conscious Global Village.
