ICARUS RISING - A Polarod Lift Fine Wall Art Photo Print Series by Paul E Williams { 57 images } Created 5 Aug 2021

Icarus No 1 - Icarus Flying - From the series Icarus rising a polaroid lift art print series by Photographer Paul E Williams taken 1992. Icarus Rising photos come from a polaroid animation of the same name by Paul E Williams.

Based on the ancient Greek myth of Icarus who escaped, with his father Daedalus, from Crete by means of wings that Daedalus constructed from feathers and wax. Daedalus warns Icarus first of complacency and then of hubris, instructing him to fly neither too low nor too high, lest the sea's dampness clog his wings or the sun's heat melt them. Icarus ignores Daedalus’s instructions not to fly too close to the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt and he tumbles out of the sky, falls into the sea, and drowns. “Most of us try to fly too close to the sun believing that we are the centre of the universe and that the rules of our universe do not apply to us. The Ancients Greeks recognised this in Myths like Icarus written 3000 years ago so it is probably hard wired into us. Whilst the belief that we are above nature has probably been one of the main driving forces that have made us dominant a species on this planet at the moment, it is also a driving force that is probably leading our species extinction. These photos a reminder all of us that fly too close to the sun”. Paul E Williams 2021..
