Merida was founded in 25 BC to house discharged soldiers of the Army of Augustus and to protect the Roman Bridge that still spans the Guadiana River. Merida still boasts the ruins of Roman aqueducts, Theatre, Colosseum and Temples. The extensive excavations at Merida revealed many statues that are now housed in the new National Museum of Roman Art.
