The Roman City of Nemausus, present day Nimes, is situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. In about 28 BC Nemausus became a Roman colony and by the time of Augustus had a population of 60,000 Romans. The city was ringed by 6 km (3.7 miles) of ramparts with 14 towers and was known as the Porta Augusta or the doorway to Gaul, present day France.
