The Virgin Mary is seated with the child standing on her lap, in an attitude of blessing, accompanied by angels with incentives. The composition is very simple and fuses Sienese and Florentine pictorial traditions in the style of Lorenzo Monaco, monk of the convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence and the last representative of the style of Giotto before the Renaissance revival of Fra Angelico.

The cathedral is part of a Georgian Orthodox monastery founded by the monk Joseph [Abba] Alaverdeli, who came from Antioch and settled in Alaverdi. On the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tentative List.

This Romanesque painted altar front is dedicated to the Nativity. At is centre is a painting of The Madonna and Child surrounded by a mandorla. Top left shows the Annunciation with the Virgin Mary, top left depicts the nativity scene, bottom left shows the Three Kings and bottom left shows The Flight to Egypt.
